ozchamps 2008 third judge required

We're in need of a third judge for the comp later this month, preferably with previous judging experience.

With Ben McPhee out of the country, I believe there's only two others who can meet this requirement! If anyone's in contact with either Sleeper/Van from the comic book shop or Dave Quach please give them a heads up.

If we're unable to get in contact with either in the next two weeks we need someone to step forward and receive some comprehensive training from Stu and Dimi on how to be a clicker, er, judge!

I'll update this thread when I get any news.

Im pretty interested in becoming a judge, though I only have a slight idea of how the judging works.

If you guys can't find another judge I'll be happy to step up and learn how it all works, I have nothing but free time till the event so I can research it all and such. I think im staying with Dimi for 4 days before the the comp so I can talk to him.

Edit: Im also interested in becoming a judge for future aus comps so I'll talk to you, Stu about learning how it works anyway

I will spend some time with Anthony (Cookee) to expose him to judging and its criteria. If he was to shadow judge then we would have another person ready for other events in the future. I suggest we strongly look at this if we want to support the future of the Australian Nationals.

If Dimi reads this- can you get any of the vids that the Spinworkx guys use for such training. Bring them on your laptop? They were freestyles etc that were used with Taka and Hironori while training. A great tool for this occassion.

Anyone happen to know if there is any published material on the internet on how to judge at a contest?

I'm still down to learn how to judge if it comes down to having to use an inexperienced judge...

From what ive heard from Stu, before you can judge you need to effectively be 'tested' to make sure the scores you give each contestant are very similar to the ones the rest of the judges give. This is what he was referring to when he mentioned 'shadow' judging. You'd score each person, and they'd check out your scores to make sure they were ok, but they wouldn't actually count.

The actual act of judging involves holding 2 clickers, 1 for positive points, one for negative. Every string hit (each time the yoyo hits a string) on a unique trick (ie they can't do trapeze 800 times, only the first one would count for 1 point) they get a point. Every time they stuff up, ie miss a trapeze, they loose a point. Changing a yoyo counts for more (-ve points). Thats as much as I know about it. Im not sure what else gets points, ie things like suicides, or other slack tricks (ie yoyo never hits a string, but they do lost of other cool things)
